담예(DAMYE)의 두 번째 정규, [The Sandwich Artist]

첫 번째 정규앨범 [LIFE'S A LOOP]이 진중한 이야기를 버클리음대 재학시절 쌓은 인연들과 함께 음악적 욕심을 한껏 부려 가득 담은 작품이라면, 이후 발표한 [아사랑에빠지고싶] 싱글부터 담예는 조금 힘을 빼고, 일상에서 느끼는 소소하지만 솔직한 감정에 집중해 곡을 만들어왔다. 두 번째 정규 [The Sandwich Artist] 역시 이러한 최근의 담예표 창작의 연장선이다. 앨범에 수록된 8곡 모두 그가 샌드위치 가게에서 아르바이트하며 만든 인연과 이야기들을 기반으로 동시기에 자신이 느낀 감정들을 진솔하게 담은 앨범이다.

이 앨범에서도 여전히 담예는 전곡에 프로듀싱, 작곡, 작사, 편곡 그리고 기타와 베이스 연주까지 담아내며 각기 다른 색깔의 곡들을 묶어내는 천재적인 감각을 보여주고 있다. 또한, 본인의 이야기가 중심이 되는 앨범인 만큼 피처링 참여진은 없지만, 필요한 부분에 위위(OuiOui)의 블루니, 보니(Boni)와 함께 3인조 콰이어(Choir)를 만들어 낸다든지, Q The Trumpet, FRETE, Lisa Yihwan Lim, 이상윤 등 동료 뮤지션들을 통해 적재적소에 트럼펫, 바이올린, 첼로, 베이스의 추가 연주를 사용해 완성도를 끌어올렸다.

결국 앨범에서 담예가 의도한 것은 무겁고 철학적인 주제가 아닌 본인이 느낀 솔직한 감정들을 음악적 역량으로 무겁지 않게 풀어내며 그 감정들을 이 앨범을 듣는 사람들과 함께 하고자 하는 것이다. [The Sandwich Artist] 앨범을 통해 우리는 허세가 아닌 솔직함으로 자신의 색을 확고히 하며 완성되어가는 ‘진짜’ 담예를 만날 수 있다.
